Are you constantly feeling run down and tired?
Your answer to these questions may lie in the foods you eat and the herbs you take, but we live in a world where people rarely bother with the healing properties of food anymore.
In fact, most people don’t even know what medicinal mushrooms are or how their medicinal powers can improve your health.
Read on to learn more!
Chaga
One of my favorite medicinal mushrooms is Chaga. It’s a fungus in the Birch family and has been consumed by traditional cultures in Russia and Eastern Europe for centuries. Folklore claims it can cure everything from cancer to diabetes to AIDS—but what does research say? Research says that Chaga is a powerful antioxidant. Antioxidants fight free radicals (unstable molecules) that do damage to your body. Free radicals have been linked to diseases like cancer, heart disease, and dementia.
Reishi
A Mushroom that Boosts your Immune System Reishi mushrooms can help to prevent illness and boost your immune system. Research shows that taking reishi may reduce inflammation and lower cholesterol in a way similar to statins. It also appears to be an antioxidant and anti-cancer agent. But perhaps its most exciting benefit is its ability to raise levels of NGF (nerve growth factor) in your brain, potentially reversing cognitive decline.
Cordyceps
There are many medicinal mushrooms that help boost immunity, increase longevity and improve health. One such variety is Cordyceps sinensis , also known as caterpillar fungus. A powerful immune system booster, cordyceps stimulates white blood cell production and increases their capacity to destroy pathogens and tumors. The human body isn’t able to produce white blood cells on its own so increasing them is vital in times of illness or after trauma to help prevent infection.
Maitake
Along with its immune-boosting abilities, Maitake mushrooms have been used in Chinese medicine for their ability to clear heat and fire from rashes and boils. Research also shows that Maitake has antifungal properties (1). If you suffer from a fungal condition like athlete’s foot or jock itch, be sure to try a few Maitake caps as an over-the-counter remedy.
Agarikon
The most medicinal mushroom in existence. Arguably one of the most delicious—and certainly one of the most versatile—is Agarikon (Agaricus blazei). It is commonly known as a healing herb because it has anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties that heal and revitalize cells. In addition to its immune-boosting powers, it is also high in protein and fiber.
Shiitake
These forest mushrooms are a staple of Asian cuisines. Shiitake contains lentinan, which has been shown to stimulate immune cells and increase production of antibodies. It’s also a rich source of iron and can be used in place of meat to boost protein intake and cut down on saturated fat. Be careful not to overcook your shiitakes; they contain carcinogens when cooked at high temperatures for prolonged periods.
